Brendan was born and raised in Bakersfield, CA. He moved to Cal Poly San Luis Obispo for his undergraduate studies where he researched low-energy food pathogen eradication methods and developed microbial fuel cells for autonomous robots. After receiving his BSc in Microbiology in 2017, Brendan then moved to the University of Texas at Austin and joined the lab of Edward Marcotte for his graduate work where he received his Ph.D. in Cell and Molecular Biology in 2022. Here Brendan largely focused on developing mass spectrometry methods to identify phosphorylation-regulated protein interactions and applying and inventing technologies for single-molecule protein sequencing. In the Bertozzi lab, Brendan is interested in understanding the systems-wide effects of targeted therapeutics and developing schemes for single-molecule glycoproteomics.
