Michael Schoof was born and raised in the Chicagoland area. As an undergrad Michael studied biology at Stanford University and while there worked in the lab of Anne Brunet doing aging research in C. elegans. After completing his degree in 2016, he moved to the University of Cambridge for an MPhil and worked in Julie Ahringer’s lab, putting his past experience to good use studying enhancer and promoter usage in the aging worm. Michael then moved back to the bay area to do his PhD at UCSF under the mentorship of Peter Walter. In Peter’s lab Michael studied the Integrated Stress Response and the central player in this pathway, the translation initiation factor eIF2B. In addition to this work, Michael conducted Covid-19 antibody research in collaboration with Aashish Manglik’s lab. Returning to Stanford, Michael works jointly between the Bertozzi and Wyss-Cory labs studying the role of glycosylation in aging.
